Are there any good places to help you fix your credit?
Glenn Roberts asked:
I’m wanting to slowly but surely pay off old bills that have been turned to collection agency’s and so forth. Is there any business that is real good to help you do that and fix your credit?

Easy to do yourself. Very easy.
Go grab your car keys and go to a library or bookstore and grab a book on
Credit and Debt Repair
The books have ALL the tips and secrets on how to repair your credit and pay off your debts like a pro.
Don’t pay anyone any money for something you can do yourself.
Besides some of these companies charge you thousands.
The first few months of payments they put in their pockets as their profits allow your credit cards to go unpaid with higher interest rates and late fees. This will destroy your credit even further.
Remember – only one person truly cares about you – and that’s YOU…

Look in the mirror and fix it yourself. Gather all your info and bills and one by one see what the problem is, lates/collections/ etc. and work on them. ALL offers should be in WRITING ONLY but you can offer as little as 25% on debts older than 3 years and like 50% on ones that are just a year or two old. Be prepared to pay in lump sum if you get a good deal. You can also try for deletions for paying the bills but it will probably cost you more to do that. EVERYTHING is in writing, STAY OFF THE PHONE (period), once they accept or negotiate pay with money order or cashier’s check NEVER apersonal check or give them access to your account no matter how much they tell you otherwise. Keep the proof forever.
Did I say stay off the PHONE.

Don’t waste your money paying a credit repair or debt settlement company. Many are scams and will just take your money.
You can just do it yourself. Get a copy of your credit report (AnnualCreditReport.com) and see what is showing. Derogatory items age off 7-1/2 years from the date of first deficiency (default). So you may want to let anything close to that date just age off. Start with the newest default and work back to the oldest.
Keep in mind that paying off old debt will not improve your score. However, creditors look at your whole credit report, not just the score. Paid old debt looks better. With this in mind, you may as well settle for as little as possible. General rule of thumb: if the debt is over 3 years old, offer 25%; 2 or 3 years old, offer 50%; less than 2, offer 75%. Lump sum gets the best deals. Payment plans must be short term. Get any settlement agreement in writing and do not give the collector direct access to your bank account.
If any of these debts are single entry items like medical or utility bills, you can try to negotiate a pay for delete — you pay and they remove the item. Some collection agencies will agree and some won’t. This won’t work for regularly reported items like loans and credit cards. Collection agencies can only remove what they report. The original creditor’s charge off would remain.
You will still have to re-build your credit. It will take at least 24 months of consistent, on time payment history to improve your score. If you don’t have an open, active line of credit, get one, even if you have to get a secured card. Use the card and pay the balance in full every month. This will give you good payment history and avoid interest.

No And don’t believe any firms that tell you they can erase bad credit, or reduce your debt by 50%. They just want to charge you a huge fee and leave you hanging when you get sued in the end!
If you have credit card debt that you need help with, you can contact a local chapter of for help.

Places? Yes.
Business? No.
The place is your house.
You can fix your credit, yourself, without using a business.
Or you can use a business, and let your credit get worse.
But you cannot use a business and fix your credit.

There is nothing that a credit repair company can do for you that you cannot do yourself! That being said, there are 4 Federal laws that regulate the credit reporting agencies, creditors and collection agencies and it can get confusing. There is a website called MyCreditABC.com that gives you an amazing system that allows you to do it yourself, keep organized and helps you navigate the system. The credit reporting agencies have designed what is mostly an automated system designed to frustrate you and get you to stop insuring that your credit report is accurate and giving you a fair score….which is your RIGHT under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
