Should I subscribe to free credit score reporting ? Sears is offering a subscription for free?

BeezKneez asked:

I dont known if I should go for this, I heard everytime you check your credit score you get “dinged” further.

Sears offered a free FICA check every month ” a 96$ value.

I have no IDEA what to do.

I would read the “fine print”. You can get a free credit report from each of the three major bureaus one time per year ( I recommend spreading them out, i.e. Experian in January, TransUnion in May, Equifax in September). Go to. (Not Free Credit Report – wrong one!) They do not give you a FICO score, however, unless you pay for it. If you need to have your FICO scores, I recommend going to myfico.com and looking at Suze Orman’s FICO kit. Also google it to see if you can get it for a better price somewhere else, because sometimes you can. Educate yourself about credit at myfico.com also – click on Credit Education. What you don’t know CAN hurt you.

There is only one really free credit report – all the other ones have some kind of catch, like having to subscribe to something that they hope you forget to cancel, etc.

And it won’t affect your credit score when you inquire about your own credit score – it’s only when some other entity (store, bank etc.) checks on it.

You can get your free credit score at. It is your score from data reported to TransUnion, one of the three major credit bureaus.

As others have stated, the site where you get your free credit report is.

No reason to sign up or pay for either, unless perhaps you were going to buy a home and you wanted to see your credit score from Experian and Equifax. Then, I would go to. That’s less expensive than paying a monthly fee.

I would NOT do it. Believe me, there will be some sort of monthly fee for this that is in the fine print. Why on earth does SEARS of all places need to help you monitor your score. Tell them you can *monitor* your own score. Unless you want to get hit with a subscription you will have a hard time cancelling, do not do it!!!!

Also, checking your own FICO score does not count as an inquiry.
